Well I didn’t see this one coming. After a decade without so much as a note and longer without producing anything of real note, Bowie slipped this astonishing album out unannounced in February. The cover nod to Heroes, one of his late 1970s Berlin trilogy, was intentional as this album recaptured some of the invention and intensity of that period while The Stars (Are Out Tonight) and Where Are We Now? are as emotional as anything Bowie has ever written. To be his age and put out something as bold and challenging as this is remarkable. As he sings on the title track: “Here I am, not quite died.” We should enjoy him while we can.
