How do you follow one of the most original debut albums in recent years (2010’s The ArchAndroid)? Simple. Produce a double album that’s even better. On Electric Lady Monáe continues the story of her science fiction alter-ego Cindy Maywether (a cyborg on the run for falling love with a human) with panache and killer songs like the beautiful Primetime (with Miguel) and Dance Apocalyptic. The fact that she continues to march to a very different and individual beat than most of her contemporaries makes her one of the most exciting, talented and innovative women working in any genre right now. Outstanding.
