Corporations to be abolished

The Royal Gazette is reporting that the Corporations of Hamilton and St. George’s are to be abolished. The municipalities were told of the decision in a letter from Cabinet last week that stated:

“In its Throne Speech of 2008, the Government of Bermuda undertook to reform Bermuda’s municipalities; in considering the best means to do so, Cabinet determined that the most practical, efficient and effective reform would be to repeal the Municipalities Act 1923 and transition the operations of the municipalities into the relevant government departments.”

There’s no question that the Corporations – long criticised for their lack of public access and secrecy – need reform but given recent events, the timing is interesting to say the least. Many will view this as another example of Dr. Brown’s questionable agenda. It can only add fuel to tomorrow’s  protest at the House of Assembly …
