The island’s media, stung into action by Government’s controversial proposed Media Council bill and admitting they “dropped the ball” have put forward their own plan for a self-regulated body to be in place by September.
Signed by Thaao Dill, Inter-Island Communications; Chris Lodge, DeFontes Broadcasting Co.; Rick Richardson, Bermuda Broadcasting Co.; Tony McWilliam, Bermuda Sun; and Bill Zuill, Royal Gazette, the statement reads:
[Today] We submitted a written pledge to have the self-regulated council up and running by September 14, 2010.
We also made a commitment to jointly sign and adopt a Code of Practice by June 8, 2010.

UPDATE: Government has said it will scrap the bill if the media fulfills its promise to set up its own body.
