Quite how Jake Bugg, a 19-year-old kid from a grim estate in Nottingham came to be a guitar prodigy whose distinctive sound is an electrifying jolt of retro skiffle, country rock and power pop, I don’t know. Shangri La, his second album in a year, proved that his self-titled 2012 debut was no fluke. Legendary producer Rick Rubin added depth to Bugg’s sound without losing his raw energy but it’s slower songs like the beautiful Pine Trees and Kitchen Table that mark him out as a songwriter of rare talent.
