MacThin is in

So what was in the air at Macworld? The MacBook Air, that’s what. In his keynote, Apple boss Steve Jobs unveiled the “world’s thinnest notebook” and at 3 pounds, 0.76 inches deep (that’s about a pencil width) and a 13.3 inch screen with an 80GB hard drive, it looks a beauty. No touch screen but you can perform many of those cool iPhone tricks on the extra large track pad. No CD/DVD drive either – that’s a $99 extra. Looks great but $1,799?! Are you kidding? For now, I could live with the extra two pounds on a MacBook. Among the other announcements: the very cool Time Capsule – an automatic wireless backup in 500Gb and 1TB models that also doubles as an Airport base station; a bunch of added features to the iPhone and iPod Touch, a cheaper, standalone Apple TV; and movies to rent from iTunes store – in HD too (but of course, not if you’re in Bermuda). For more details, check out Macworld’s coverage

Macworld fever

Another Macworld is just days away and the rumours are flying. Who knows what Steve has up his mock turtleneck sleeve. It ain’t a Mac Pro (they announced the awesome 8-core beast last week), and it sure isn’t a Bermuda-ready iPhone (sniff …). Like MacRumours and others, Breezeblog is hoping for an ultralight touch screen laptop. But judging from the banners around the Moscone Centre venue in San Francisco, something major in the wireless/phone arena may be on the cards.

Apple to rent movies on iTunes

Posted: December 28, 2007 in internet, Mac, movies

Coming soon to iTunes: movies for rent. Apple and Fox have apparently reached an agreement that will see Fox movies available for limited time rental as they are released on DVD. The movies will be available for viewing on iPods and iPhones too. The move will heat up the growing online movie competition with Amazon and Netflix and likely give a boost to Apple’s neat but largely overlooked Apple TV device.  Rumours are that movies would rent for about $2.99 for 30 days – although Bermuda users will likely be hamstrung by the usual international copyright rules if they try to download them. [Surely at some point in this digital instant gratification revolution, the whole international copyright law infrastructure is going to have to be completely overhauled, right?] Incidentally, one movie rental service worth checking out is Jaman which has a growing selection of excellent quality indie and international movies that play on Mac, PC or on your TV via Apple TV (and a little hack).
