A touch of iTunes Genius

Posted: September 14, 2008 in Mac, media, movies, music, Technology

I haven’t had much time to fiddle around too much with iTunes 8.0 but I do like the Genius sidebar. Basically, Genius will select similar songs based on a track you select in your iTunes library. In the main sidebar it will select songs from the iTunes store that you don’t own – it’s a great way of discovering music you might not otherwise have heard, although it is limited to iTunes tracks, so Uzimon but no Beatles for example. If you hit the “atomic” icon next to “Burn Disc” at the bottom of your iTunes window, Genius will create a playlist from songs in your library which you can then save this playlist to your library – pretty handy if, like me, you never have the time to compile playlists for every occasion plus its another way of rediscovering those tracks that you ripped long ago and now lie buried somewhere in those mounting gigabytes on your hard drive.

While we’re on the subject of iTunes, I was very impressed to find that episodes of ongoing TV series like the new season of AMC’s “Mad Men” are available the same week as broadcast. Yes, I could set my WOW box to record the series but it has been unreliable and WOW’s online programming guide is crap. Much easier to click “buy” on Apple TV and have the whole series on tap – and at $22.99 for the whole 13-part season, it’s a bargain compared to buying the box set, with the added duty and shipping.

iTunes cards on sale in Bermuda

Posted: September 13, 2008 in Bermuda, Mac, music

Finally, a small break for Bermuda’s long-suffering iTunes fans. You can now buy iTunes gift cards on the Island – at a price. Red Laser is now selling them – at around $30 for the $25 card and $59 for the $50. They are currently sold out but expect to have more in next week. It’s better than nothing but it makes downloading absurdly expensive – so you’re still better off surreptitiously slipping a few in your wallet next time you’re travelling.

I just hope someday soon a top Apple exec vacations on the Island and gets it in the neck from local Apple users about what a pain in the arse the company is to deal with when it comes to ordering online, using iTunes and – dare I mention it – getting a legit iPhone. That way we might get something done. Surely someone here must reinsure something Apple related – maybe they can put a harsh word in.

No one’s saying anything but maybe something will give on the iPhone front later this year as local carriers roll out their 3G networks.  The damned thing’s been out for 18 months, for God’s sake! How difficult can it be? Can someone enlighten me? [Also if anyone out there has sucessfully hacked a 3G iPhone for Bermuda, please drop me a confidential line at gib.chris@gmail.com]

We share a vintage, Paul Weller and I, The Modfather and yours truly having both slipped past the half-century mark during the last year. Some of the best nights of my early 20s were spent pogoing to The Jam and the last UK gig I saw before leaving for Bermuda was their emotional farewell at the old Wembley Empire Pool in December 1982, so it was good to finally see in concert again a man whose music I’ve loved ever since I first heard the opening chords to In The City and who proved, with his latest CD, 22 Dreams, that he is as vital and creative as ever.

But as I watched The Great Man bobbing and weaving around the stage at the V Festival in Toronto the other night with an energy and enthusiasm that musicians half his age would envy, I realised I’m not as young as I like to think I  am. As I contemplate a (hopefully) routine colonoscopy tomorrow, I wonder if Weller worries about such  things. Or prostate exams, or any of the other joys of being over 50. At least my hair’s not grey, though.
