Apple TV strikes a sour note

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love my Apple TV but one quirk caused some gnashing of teeth in Chez Breezeblog this week.

I went to rent a movie one night only to find that the iTunes store was temporarily offline. No problem, I thought, I’ll just go an download it on my iMac and sync it later. After all, I have been able to watch purchased movies downloaded on both my iMac and a Mini with no problem and I have watched rented movies downloaded on the Apple TV on my iMac.

Well guess what? For reasons known only to Steve Jobs, you can’t sync rented movies from iTunes to your Apple TV. How dumb is that?! I’ve searched all the forums I know and no one seems to know why this is. So Cupertino, if you’re listening, please fix this. Oh, and how about a $3.99 credit for “This Is England” while you’re at it …

Mac treats from Tasty

Following an item in the recent issue Macworld, I have been pimping my Safari browser and iMac with a trio of useful little apps from Tasty OS X Software & Widgets which I can throughly recommend. WebSnapper ($15) lets you click and save entire web pages as a PDF – complete with links. You can set it as a button on your browser bar or drag any URL to the WebSnapper window. Way better than trying to print them out!

While you’re at Tasty, try out VideoBox ($15) which lets you drag video cips or URLs off the web and automatically converts them to Quicktime formats for your iPod, iPhone, or iTunes – it also converts to wmv, avi and other formats too. Again, you can set this as a button on your browser too.

One of the things I don’t like about zip files is that when I unzip them, they either scatter the files all over the place or it creates a whole new folder which irritatingly means you then have to delete the original zip. Now I have Tasty Unzip ($8), when I click on the zip, it replaces the zip file with the contents and sends the zip file to the Trash where it belongs.

They’re all leopard compatible and available for free trial (5-15 days depending on the app).

Spanning the missing sync

I’m a big fan of GMail – it’s been my primary e-mail for a while now – but one thing that bugs me is that I can’t sync my Mac address book with my GMail contacts. But salvation is finally at hand. Spanning Sync, a great tool I use to sync my Mac iCal with my (preferred) Google Calendar, will shortly release version 2.0 which will do both Contacts and Calendar syncs. If it works as well as this demo, I’ll be first in line …
