Stay strong – public protests are not tea parties.  Good column in today’s Sun from Stuart Hayward, encouraging anti-Brown protestors not to give up:

The PLP leaders are evidently highly troubled by the public reaction and response to their leader’s reckless smuggling of four Uighurs into the island.

Chief among things troubling them is the mobilisation of a couple of thousand citizens in less than two weeks of protests, a level of orderly public display not seen on this rock during my lifetime. And while Premier Brown may boast of having seen larger and louder demonstrations, never in memory has Bermuda seen a larger, more vocal and more orderly gathering than showed up to protest recently.

To have hundreds of citizens shouting slogans calling for the ouster of a sitting Premier is unprecedented. And for them to be doing this despite the implied threats from the Premier’s chief propagandists – who proclaimed a counter-demonstration in tones that suggested “outnumbering” and “overpowering” any protesters – demonstrates levels of solidarity and commitment not seen here for perhaps half a century or more.

I’m loving the new Bermuda JEWEL blog already. I was about to choke on the latest rantings of Walter Roban this morning when I read yesterday’s post by A Visitor’s Perspective and was reassured from the ensuing debate that there are still sensible, honourable people in the PLP who could, if they want, stop this current insanity and hatred from destroying the Government, their party and the very fabric of our fragile society. Here’s part of what he/she had to say:

There comes a time when, traveling down the road toward a destination, that a passenger realizes that the bus is going in the wrong direction.  The passenger may be silent, in hopes that, eventually, the bus will find the right road, and continue its journey.  The passenger may speak to the driver, and ask them to stop for directions, or to take a different route.  Many passengers may speak to the driver and express similar thoughts.  But if the driver chooses to ignore them, then the passengers need to figure out how and when to seek a new driver.

NOTE: This post has been amended from yesterday. I mistakenly credited the Bermuda JEWEL post as being by former PLP Senator Davida Morris. Ms Morris did moderate the post but the content was, in fact, a guest post submitted by A Visitor’s Perspective. I have no idea who he or she is. Apologies for the error!

Welcome to JEWEL

As mentioned in a previous post, PLP blogger Jonathan Starling and former PLP Senator Davida Morris have now launched a welcome new blog, Bermuda JEWEL.

According to the site, Bermuda JEWEL is a political organisation, not a party,  with the aim of “involving the citizens of Bermuda in the process of Government, with the aim of achieving economic, social and ecological justice and democracy”. JEWEL itself stands for Joint Endeavor for Welfare, Education & Liberation.

“This name indicates the aims and objectives of the organisation – welfare, education and liberation of Bermudian citizens. The founders of JEWEL come from the Progressive Labour Party, both members and supporters. It is our contention that the PLP has lost its committment to economic, social and ecological justice and democracy. We feel that it is no longer possible to advocate effectively for these goals within the PLP – radical critique and free discussion has been stifled within the Party, and that is a threat to the long-term benefit of our people.”

Sounds like a breath of fresh air to me. Good luck and welcome to the blogosphere, guys!

FOOTNOTE: Sad to see that the provacative and always entertaining Vexed Bermoothes is calling it a day – at least for now. He said on his/her blog today:

… after more than 750 posts, far too many of which are focussed on the constant circus surrounding Ewart Brown, with the ensuing pressures, I am taking a break from active blogging.

Come back soon, Vexed!
