Bermuda’s marine life gets a whole new world of exposure in the new beta version of Google Earth 5. Zoom into Bermuda and you’ll discover a wealth of new photos, information and video on Bermuda’s marine life, shipwrecks, William Beebe’s famous bathysphere dive, and more, like this cute video of a seahorse by Choy Aming.

Bermuda is one of 11 geographical locations highlighted in Google Earth’s new Ocean feature along with the Hawaiian Islands, the Great Barrier Reef, the Antarctic, the Arctic, the Patagonian Shelf, Monterey Bay, the Mediterranean, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and global oceans. Google has teamed up with National Geographic, BBC Earth, Coustaeu Open World and others to provide some amazing tools like 3D maps of the ocean floor, animal tracking and where to find top surfing, kite surfing and dive spots.

Picasa 3 for Mac looks sharp

Have been having fun with Google’s new Picasa 3 for Mac photo-sharing software. I share most of my photos online through either Picasa or Facebook, usually using the exporter plug-ins you can add to iPhoto. The new version of Picasa makes it even easier to organise and share pictures. In addition to uploading fast and seamlessly to Picasa Web Albums for sharing with family and friends, there’s a whole slew of new features that let you adjust everything from red eye to colour temperature as well as neat effects like soft focus, film grain and graduated tint. It’s not Photoshop by any means but you can very quickly make some interesting tweaks and corrections. You can import all your existing pictures from your hard drive to Picasa but if you alter an image in anyway, Picasa will make a new copy and leave the original iPhoto image untouched.  Picasa also has push-button options for e-mailing images, creating collages, gift CDs, uploading to Blogger accounts and slidehow movies that you can upload directly to YouTube. Not bad for free!

The 3D Moment

CNN.com – Special Reports – The 44th President – The Moment

If you saw CNN’s Inauguration coverage you may have seen them talk about the “3D Moment”, a clever piece of technology from Microsoft called Photosynth that creates 3D composites from hundreds of 2D digital images. CNN viewers e-mailed in their shots of “The Moment” Obama was sworn in and the result is a pretty cool panoramic shot of an historic event. You’ll need to download Microsoft’s Silverlight to view it – it worth it as the result is lot more impressive than you could see on CNN! Follow the Photosynth link to find out how you can create similar 3D effects at home.
