snow go yet

Posted: September 17, 2009 in Mac, Technology

So much for my plans to install Snow Leopard this weekend. It seems like a few of my favourite apps – such as My Private Network (my lifeline to the BBC iPlayer) – aren’t yet fully compatible. MPN told me: “It seems that Apple have broken the PPTP implementation in Snow Leopard, I guess they will fix it, but at the moment it is broken.”  Carbonite – my indispensable online backup – will apparently work but will not be not supported under Snow Leopard until October. Knowing my luck, that will be when the house burns down and I need it NOW, so I’m not taking the risk. Issues with key work apps like Adobe CS3 also make me nervous so I think I’m going to put the DVD back in its box until Halloween and everything’s fixed. Halloween? Ooh-er, maybe that’s tempting fate …

As stated in an earlier post, there’s an excellent wikidot guide to known issues here. For those looking for install tips and tricks, Gina Trapani’s excellent Lifehacker blog has an easy to follow how-to guide.

Spotify coming to the iPhone

The next killer app for the iPhone? My bet is the Spotify music streaming service. It’s already available for the iPhone in Europe and will likely be part of Spotify’s rollout in the US later this year. I’m already a big fan of the service which basically gives you fast and great-sounding access to tons of music “in the cloud”. You can’t buy or download the music but as long as you have a net connection, a huge jukebox is available for you to choose from. In Europe you can use it for free (and put up with ads) or pay about $15 a month for the premium ad-free service [you can access the free version from here by using a VPN service like My Private Network]. If it saves you two impulse buys of dodgy albums a month on iTunes, then it pays for itself pretty quickly. As more leading artists put up material on Spotify, it could very well threaten iTunes as the leading digital music delivery system. Having a global jukebox available on the fly on the iPhone will be pretty damn cool.

Apple tablet rumors grow

Oh wouldn’t this be nice if this turns out to be true? According to Engadget, Mac lovers might finally get what they wish for in terms of a tablet based on the brilliant iPhone/Touch technology. The Taiwan Economic News reports “industry sources” saying it’ll have a 9.6-inch multitouch screen, built-in HSDPA, a long lasting battery pack, and a $799 to $999 price tag. Apparently, sources say parts are shipping to Apple in December ready for a February launch. Can I pre-order now, please?
